Why study Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the science of the very small - working on a scale of nanometres, a millionth of a millimetre. New products and processes are developed where physics, chemistry, biology and engineering meet. Nanotechnology applications include computer technology, healthcare, sustainability and helping to make vehicles and machines faster, lighter and stronger.

We offer an undergraduate program and a combined Bachelor and Master's course. Top students can blend a Master's qualification in nanotechnology with an honours-level science program.

About this course
A La Trobe Bachelor of Science degree gives you the skills and knowledge to contribute to some of today's biggest challenges, like protecting endangered animals or developing new ways to treat disease.

This is one of our most flexible degrees with up to 14 majors to choose from including biochemistry, biomedical science, botany, chemistry, environmental geoscience, genetics, mathematics, microbiology, molecular biology, nanotechnology, pharmaceutical chemistry, physics, statistics, and zoology. You will study a range of subjects to give you a foundation in science and related disciplines. Then you will either select two science specialties or combine your science major with studies from another discipline, like business.

Throughout your course, you'll have access to purpose-built facilities including the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science. You'll also have opportunities for work placements with organisations like the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and other businesses conducting research in biochemistry, chemistry and genetics.

Through our partnerships with education providers all over the world, you'll also have the opportunity to study abroad and gain knowledge of alternative scientific processes and practices.

Career opportunities
Once you graduate, you'll be ready to take up positions in areas as diverse as government, defence, research, astronomy, meteorology, business, journalism and management.

VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics.

NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
Year 12 and non-year 12 extra requirements
Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application. Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal Statement online for other information to be considered during the selection process e.g. details on work experience or reasons for applying. Selection may also be based on GPA or STAT Multiple Choice.
Subject bonus
A study score of 25 in Maths: Specialist Mathematics or any Science equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.
Costs
Depending on the subjects chosen, extra costs can include a laboratory coat - about A$30 - and a dissecting kit - about A$40. Students can purchase these items from any supplier; they remain students' personal property. Additional costs for fieldtrips - food, accommodation and travel - may also apply.

About this course
Our double degree in this growing industry - science and engineering on a tiny scale - has applications from making surfaces dirt-repellent to developing more effective cancer treatments.

Fields set to benefit from nanotech include medicine, manufacturing, computing, environmental sustainability, textiles and cosmetics. In fact, anywhere that physics, chemistry, biology and engineering intersect can benefit from nanotechnology.

This degree gives you knowledge of biochemistry, chemistry, mathematics, physics as well as nanotech subjects including nanomaterials and fabrication, synchrotron science and technology, and bionanotechnology.

Our focus on practical skills and experience means you'll develop your own nanotech project in your final year as you complete your Master's thesis, hosted by a leading research group or organisation, for example CSIRO. Fifth year also includes a study tour - in 2013 our students travelled to the Nano Tech Exhibition and Conference in Tokyo.

Our cadetship program provides work experience in industries like manufacturing, mining, pharmaceuticals and consulting. You can also take advantage of overseas study opportunities with our exchange partners in over 30 countries, and may be eligible for scholarships including the Ambassador Scholarships in Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and the Dean's Scholarship for Academic Excellence.

With their cross-disciplinary skills, nanotech graduates are in global demand for research and product development. Our students have found work with companies including Dulux, Starpharma, and Australian Radiation Services.
Professional recognition
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Nanotechnology may apply for membership with the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP). Depending on subject choice, graduates may also apply for membership with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Fees are indicative only and set at 120 credit points per course, unless otherwise stated, and may vary depending on the number of credit points in which students enrol. Some courses may vary in credit point load and fees will be adjusted accordingly.
